Peace is a fleeting moment, not a sustainable state of mind or a physical place someone can inhabit. By creating a place conducive to thought and reflection, the bridge’s subtle design allows the viewer to remain in the moment, free of distraction. Upon entering the monument, the path rises to represent conflict, and the incline prevents the viewer from seeing what lies ahead. The center platform is the representation of peace — the experience is most connected to nature here, where the water’s tide dictates the depth to which these platforms are submerged. As the viewer leaves, they are confronted again by the incline, and find themselves once again unable to see the road ahead. Mirrored experiences contextualize the moment of reflection for the viewer’s future consideration.
